Kangaroos

A few years back I used to volunteer for W.I.R.E.S. and each person is encouraged to specialise in a certain animal. Some did training for Birds, Reptiles etc. but the mammals got split up individually. I got Eastern Grey Kangaroos.

This is Minmi and Binda. Just two of the orphan joeys I reared.

When they first arrive they need to be fed every 2 hours, including through the night. Then as they grow the frequency is reduced.

Feeding two at a time saves time, but if you have a free hour you can feed them one at a time and give them that little bit extra attention.

And then there were five. All the carers used to look after each others joeys if you had to go on a holiday or something. The most I had at once was 5 (2 were mine)and they stayed for a week. Now that was some feeding routine.

This is Minmi and Binda when they were in the rehab pen. At approx 1 year old, they go to a pen that is deliberately distant from civilization (car noises and barking dogs etc.). This is an attempt to dehumanise them before being released into the bush again. They spend about 3 months in the pen and one person goes up daily just to check they have food and water and to see that they are coping with their new environment. But they try to have no contact with them. Then they are released on large properties that do not allow shooting.
