Crathes Castle

Crathes Castle on the A93 3 miles east of Banchory. It is a 16th Century tower house and was granted to the Barnett family in 1323 by King Robert the Bruce.

What I found most interesting was the painted ceilings. Each room had a theme of kings or musicians etc. Unfortunately some had been plastered over.

This view is from the top of the tower. There are 8 separate gardens from formal to herbacious.

The yew hedges were planted in 1702. Many are topheavy now and some major pruning is taking place.
