Castle Leod

Castle Leod can be found in Strathpeffer and is one of the family homes of the MacKenzie Clan. The earliest surviving stonework is late 14th Century, though there is evidence of settlement for centuries before that.

The grounds contain a variety of trees that have been planted over the centuries. It became a family tradition to plant a tree on your first birthday and every tree is different. Hence the variety.

This Giant Sequoia was planted in 1853 with the first seed to arrive in Britain. It is the largest Giant Redwood in the UK. It is also the largest tree in the world at this latitude.

This tree is over 400 years old! It's a Spanish Chestnut and was planted in 1553 to mark the granting of the land by Mary Queen of Scots to John of Killen. It is the first recorded planting of any tree in Britain.
