# Bon Secour wildlife refuge - Link: https://mywalkabout.net/bon-secour-wildlife-refuge/ - Published: 2025-06-01T06:10:55-07:00 - Author: My Walkabout **After a couple of days** living a beach bum’s life on the sandy white shores around Gulf Shores, I thought I would explore more of the area. Bon Secour was only about 15-20 minutes away, so I take a quick drive to the wildlife refuge. ![](https://i0.wp.com/mywalkabout.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/IMG_1015.jpg?resize =640%2C480&ssl=1) **In the month of December**, I wasn’t too worried about snakes or alligators, but one can never be too cautious when exploring a new part of the country. My eyes were constanting surveying the area as I walked, but all I saw were birds and gorgeous swampland. ![](https://i0.wp.com/mywalkabout.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/HOVER_20241230_1735590239494. jpg?resize=640%2C479&ssl=1) **The refuge trail took me** straight out to the Gulf of Mexico. From here I went walking along the beach for miles, first in one direction, then back the other way. It was perfect solitude, only sandhill cranes and the occasional couple walking.
