When I think back to our final day on the St. Winner’s 2013 school project in the slums of Nairobi, it’s the faces of the little ones I see.

Faces that haven’t seen a group of white people in such close proximity to themselves. As the days pass by though, we become closer as we all laugh together, learn together, grow together. It’s amazing transformation that happens to both the Kenyans and those serving.

The school puts together a goodbye performance, filled with music and dancing. The community surrounding the schools watches as we join in celebration with those we have come to love unconditionally. They may never know how they have changed us for the better.

Ciera, one of BCK’s team members last summer, had the brilliant idea to bring a Polaroid camera. I had a little extra money and asked my buddy Jimmy to see if he could find a cork board somewhere in the slums. I didn’t care about the cost, I wanted the school to have somewhere to save the Polaroid pictures as a remembrance. As our final gift to leave them, it couldn’t have worked out more perfectly.

From four people having a dream in 2012 to make an impact through service, to our final day with a Build.Create.Kenya team in June 2013, the realization that our dream happened was a moment I’ll never forget.

Wench, bring my ale, what say you?
