Gray skies cover Gilsland in the morning as I walk out the front door of the Hill on the Wall B & B<\/a>. I catch my reflection in one of the large windows and see a face full of thoughts about my time in Kenya. This leg of my journey will be all about reconciling those six years in the Motherland and trying to come to some form of sweet acceptance of my time there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Ferdinand Magellan was the first person to circumnavigate the earth. Ewert Scott Grogan was the first recorded person in history to walk the length of Africa. Ernesto \u201cChe\u201d Guevara travels with a friend by motorcycle from Brazil to Peru to learn more about his people and country. Chris McCandless hitchhiked his way around America until finally making it to Alaska, where he met his ultimate demise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Distance can be the amount of space between two places or things, or it can mean when a person tries to become less involved or connected.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out here the word and meaning of “Distance<\/em>” was being constantly redefined. Was I running from something, trying to escape from some inevitable truth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or was I just coming to terms with the distance that is a reality of the space between me and those that I care about? The fact that I was now in a different State from the rest of my family. The fact that the distance between me and the poor children in the slums of Nairobi left me feeling powerless to make a real change in their lives, their situation…..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact that I use distance as a buffer from people, emotions, relationships….<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I realize that the ultimate distance between my birth and my death was drawing closer, and that truth has my re-evaluating decisions for the time I have left on this earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So with each step I take on this walk to the village of Irthington I find slivers of peace being put back into my fractured heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hope to have the courage to really put into words what happened over the next few days, but for now, I am just happy to have arrived to the lovely village of Irthington and my sleeping quarters for the evening, the horse farm called Vallum Barn<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time to shower and enjoy a quiet summer evening at the local pub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
