{"id":1566,"date":"2015-06-21T21:15:00","date_gmt":"2015-06-21T21:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mywalkabout.net\/2015\/06\/21\/the-natural-history-museum-of-utah"},"modified":"2021-09-21T05:27:31","modified_gmt":"2021-09-21T12:27:31","slug":"the-natural-history-museum-of-utah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mywalkabout.net\/?p=1566","title":{"rendered":"The Natural History Museum of Utah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the foothills overlooking the Salt Lake Valley is a copper tinted building that blends perfectly into the natural environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/nhmu.utah.edu\/#_=_\">Rio Tinto Natural History Museum<\/a> was my destination for a Saturday afternoon with my niece, and I&#8217;m not sure who was more excited.<a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mywalkabout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ba501-img_9575.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mywalkabout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ba501-img_9575.jpg?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;The Eyes of the Future are looking back at us and they are praying for us to see beyond our own time.&#8221;<\/i><br \/>-Terry Tempest Williams<\/p>\n<p>A child&#8217;s curiosity and unspoiled wonder makes everything better in a place like this. We start by gazing at the world&#8217;s largest known land mammal, a massive beast that frightens her for a moment, then she laughs. We explore the tiniest of creatures under a microscope, to being in awe at the size of the horned dinosaurs.<a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mywalkabout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/f446d-img_9602.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mywalkabout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/f446d-img_9602.jpg?resize=640%2C582&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"582\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We re-create the Bonneville lake that covered the whole Salt Lake Valley under water millions of years ago, to learning about the Native American Indians that called this place home.<a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mywalkabout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/fd970-img_9623.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mywalkabout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/fd970-img_9623.jpg?resize=640%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;I&#8217;ve read that a naked eye can see six thousand stars in the hundred billion galaxies, but I couldn&#8217;t believe it, what with the white sky and starlight. I saw one million stars with one eye and two million with both.&#8221;<\/i><br \/>-William Least Heat Moon<\/p>\n<p>The origins of man confuse her in the most delightful way&#8230;<i>.&#8221;are neanderthals Jesus&#8217;s ancestors?&#8221;<\/i><br \/><i><\/i><i><\/i>I smile and let her know that they came way before him, and this seems to satisfy.<a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mywalkabout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/37be0-img_9638.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mywalkabout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/37be0-img_9638.jpg?resize=640%2C514&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"514\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We avoid the snakes and spiders where we can, and play instead with cell mitochondria and science labs, drawing horses and learning about different landscapes.<a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mywalkabout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/d583c-img_9634.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mywalkabout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/d583c-img_9634.png?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Natural History Museum is a great place to escape the summer heat for a few hours for kids of all ages.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center;
