So random it was <\/strong>that I found out about Holbox Island. I believe I just started an internet search for out of the way secret gems around Cancun. Holbox intrigued me, so I settled on a place, booked my flight, and the day after Christmas I arrived in the Cancun airport, found my ride, and started the almost three hour journey northward….<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Having been to Mexico<\/strong> a few times over the Holidays, I was looking for a more laid back trip this time around. Nothing more than relaxing at the beach, long walks in the surf, and perhaps exploring the jungles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as our boat docked, I was picked up a side-by-side, and we slowly made our way through the sand streets, trying to avoid large rain puddles, as a major storm had just rolled on through the area. The vibe was exactly what I was looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I get checked in smoothly<\/strong>, and have a evening beer on my deck as the sunset lights up the evening sky in brilliant hues. My dinner on the beach was so satisfying. I could tell that I’d made the right choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day a cold front<\/strong> came rolling through, bringing the temperatures down into the 70″s. Brutal for some, but it made the beaches less crowded (not that they really ever were). I walked from my casita back to town, enjoying the free-style life of the locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I find a jungle preserve to explore<\/strong>, sighting local birds and ocean life, as well as an area for kite surfers to play. Drinks on the beach, reading a book, eating savory food when hungry. This was the life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Year’s Eve was here<\/strong>, my last night on the Island. The hotel threw quite a party right below my room. Being solo, I just enjoyed the festivities from my deck, with the music keeping my up past midnight. It has been years since I’ve seen midnight, let alone be up to ring in a New Year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I take<\/strong> one last long walk along the quiet beach to start 2024. The lack of sleep the night before will serve me well on the flight home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
