I could say that the [Lost Horse Loop](https://www.hikespeak.com/trails/lost-horse-mine-in-joshua-tree/) trail chose me to explore her, which is as true as any statement I’ve made. My water is low, and food is scarce as I start walking into the desert. ![](https://i1.wp.com/mywalkabout.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_6400.jpg?fit =940%2C705&ssl=1) I think it will be fun to see the Lost Horse mine, a preserved mill of silver and gold back in the days of The West. Yet I take the backwards way of the trail, which puts miles under my feet before I even get to the mine viewpoint. ![](https://i1.wp.com/mywalkabout.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/HipstamaticPhoto- 562446959.111688.jpg?fit=940%2C705&ssl=1) I squeeze out the last remaining drops of water from my cantina as I push onward through the desert. I have no wildflowers this late in the year, only my dark thoughts as I push forward. I wonder if I’ve taken a wrong turn as there were plenty of cars at the trailhead, yet I haven’t seen another person for hours. ![](https://i2.wp.com/mywalkabout.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/HipstamaticPhoto- 562446954.538914.jpg?fit=940%2C705&ssl=1) The trails starts to ascend rapidly up the mountain, sweat starts to pour off my brow. My water is gone, as well as any food. I chastise myself for being hilariously unprepared, yet know that a part of me likes to push the boundaries of living. ![](https://i0.wp.com/mywalkabout.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/HipstamaticPhoto- 562447294.191169.jpg?fit=940%2C705&ssl=1) There is no glory in dying unprepared, so why do I push the limits of safety? ### Share this: * [ Email ](https://mywalkabout.net/lost-horse/?subject=%5BShared%20Post%5D%20Lost%20Horse&body=https%3A%2F%2Fmywalkabout.net%2Flost-horse%2F&share=email) * [Post](https://x.com/share) * [Share on Tumblr](https://www.tumblr.com/share) * [ WhatsApp ](https://mywalkabout.net/lost-horse/?share=jetpack-whatsapp) * [ Nextdoor ](https://mywalkabout.net/lost-horse/?share=nextdoor) * [ Threads ](https://mywalkabout.net/lost-horse/?share=threads) * [[ * [Tweet](https://twitter.com/share) * [ Reddit ](https://mywalkabout.net/lost-horse/?share=reddit) ### Like this: Like Loading…
