It was a perfect Sunday for exploring the many tunnels and staircases that wind through the interior, a way to escape the heat and humidity. Four hundred years worth of history was at our fingertips, illustrations of the remarkable work of the Spanish military engineers.

You eventually emerge topside and climb upon a fortress wall, sitting and looking out at the ocean with salty breezes cooling your skin.
