I’d never heard a song from either Taj Mahal or John Hiatt before, yet I had my ticket in hand, ready for a Sunday evening on the lawn.
Taj was first onto the stage. A beast of a man, he slowly makes his way to the stool by the microphone, and lets us know in his raspy voice that he has three speeds :
Slow, medium, and funky…
The blues never sounded so good, and his banjo playing was an incredible sight to behold.
After almost two hours, John Hiatt and his band came on. Light rain occasionally fell from the night sky, which felt appropriate company to his bluesy, country, twangy sound.
Not that their ever isn’t, but it was a good night for the Blues.
