Bloods Lake
It was the final hike for HC up in Utah for the summer. Next week he’ll be making the long drive back home until the winter holidays. But no need to look to the future, let’s just focus on the task on hand for this day. The summer morning temperatures are sublime as he makes his way up to the Guardsmen’s Pass vortex and the parking lot for the Bloods Lake trail.

Starting out, there are quite a few families on the trail, going slowly as they enjoy each other’s company. I silently make my way past them, smiling in a non-threatening way and raise a hand to give a friendly wave. I soon find myself alone as the switchbacks have me climbing in elevation. I have chipmunks and curious squirrels either chasing my heels or scampering ahead of me. Funny creatures they are, and welcome companions as I climb the mountain. The air is so crisp and clean, and each breath is welcome in my damaged lungs.

After a few miles, I come to Bloods Lake. Children are skipping stones on the still water, young men have carried an inflatable kayak to put onto the water, a few hardy people are fishing on the far side of the lake. Soaking in the peace on log, HC sees a trail that continues to climb up another mountain. After resting a spell, he continues the hike. Onward and upward, as they say. He finds a couple out in a high mountain meadow, holding hands and exchanging kisses as only young love can be expressed. A pretty Mom and her rambunctious son are collecting rocks.
HC carries on for a few more miles before the sky turns dark and the afternoon thunderclouds roll on in. As the rain falls, he starts to run down the trail. It has been years since these legs did any serious running. Even after all these years he is nimble and quick as he runs. The body is a wonder of what it can do physically, one just needs confidence and perhaps a healthy and optimistic outlook in your own abilities.
