Dobbin’s Lookout
The girl mentioned to H.C. that her boyfriend took her up to Dobbin’s Lookout at sunset to propose. Happy he was, but more importantly he remembered that he needed to go up here himself. So last week during a 108 degree Phoenix day, he did just that.

The drive to South Mountain Park was nice, much nicer than he remembered from years past when he used to come to this area on a regular basis. It was not run down or full of homeless drug addicts. Filled with nice communities, million dollar mansions alongside homes that had been passed down generationally.

In typical fashion, lost he was initially, at first thinking the gates to the top were closed, but perhaps it was just the heat melting his brain. Taking a chance on another road, he winds slowly up to the top of South Mountain and finds not only Dobbin’s Lookout, but signage for two other lookout’s out here, somewhere….

The views from up here are fantastic. Scanning for rattlesnakes, H.C. ventures out of the car into the heat to see Camelback mountain off in the far distance, the dome of Chase Field for his beloved Arizona Diamondbacks, and the truly expansive nature of the Phoenix Valley. We walks around for 10 minutes, then goes to a shaded awning before his skin burns bright red. The temp under the shaded awning had to have been at least 5 degree cooler. Excited he is to come back and explore more, as well as hikes the many trails here once November rolls around.
