Golfing The Canyons in Park City
My brother has always been a big golfer. I’m more of the type that would rather sip a cocktail, and enjoy the views while driving the cart. I do not take golf seriously, which I imagine drives my brother crazy. So I was surprised that the day I arrived to his home in Salt Lake he asked me if I wanted to join him and his friends for a game of best ball up at The Canyons golf course in Park City.
I guess their is some tension between him and his only son. This is something that I want to help fix if I can while up here this summer. His son, Cbug, asked his girlfriend’s brother to be his partner instead of his Dad, hence why I was invited. So I had multiple missions; observe their relationship, try to not humiliate myself on the golf course, and enjoy the mountains of Park City and time with my brother and his friends.

I didn’t bring my golf clubs up with me from Phoenix, which in hindsight was a mistake, but as luck would have it, one of the guys in our group is a manager of another local course, and he could get me a set of lefty clubs from the rental rack for free. The last time I swung a club was over a year ago when Cbug was still living with me in Arizona, a couple of months before he moved back home to Utah. I was feeling rusty and out of shape. I stretch and crack my old muscles and bones, and set up to the white tee’s. Perhaps it was the rental clubs, or I just don’t give myself enough credit, but I nailed the ball on the first hole. I was not going to be out driving anyone, but at least I was consistently getting my ball out there, and not losing it down the steep canyon edges or in the wild.

Around hole number five the dark rainclouds and thunder rolled in from the mountain tops, along with the wind. We layer up as best we could, but it was like the scene out of the movie Caddyshack. Luckily, the rain left as quickly as it came, but the damage to our score was done. Double bogey on hole 5. When his friends play Best Ball, they play for money, and my brother’s chances of winning were figuratively going down the drain.
We salvage our overall score though on the back nine holes, making Par a few times. I continue to hit fairly well, at least for me.

As we finish up on hole eighteen, The Utah Ballet company is putting on a concert. The Canyons Resort truly is a multi-cultural venue. I listen to the music as other groups in our party finish up. In the end, we certainly did not win, but we also did not come in last place. In fact, we ended up golfing a 66, and first place was at 60, with seven other groups getting between 61 and 65. All in all, a great afternoon of golf up in the mountains of Park City.
