My last evening in Iceland’s capital city I choose to go on a whale watching tour. This is always one of my favorite things to do whenever I’m close to the ocean, whether in my home country or abroad.

I have plenty of time on the deck of the boat to reflect on everything I have experienced over these last three weeks, the amazing highs as well as some challenging lows.
The vast ocean before me puts my own existence into perspective. I am just a small drop of rainwater that fills this vast earthly dimension in space and time.

Gratitude fills my soul. I realize that my decades of traveling solo is most likely coming to an end, or least I will be not be be going on endless adventures like I have been. I’m ok with that, as life is nothing if not full of change.

Nature puts on a fun show for us as the Icelandic whales are playful this evening. As the midnight sun slowly illuminates the sky in a soft glow, I watch the Icelandic flag wave in the ocean’s breeze. I feel at peace in this moment.

One last time I walk the streets back to my hotel and slip into the quiet bar for a beer, then head up to my room and pack for the airport the morning, and my flight back to the USA.
