Out in the wild and expansive Grande Escalante National Monument, along a single dirt road, starting outside Kanab, Utah. I’m looking for a particular slot canyon to explore but if I find some just as interesting I can easily change my plans.
This is how I stumbled upon a lone sign for the Lick Wash trailhead. At first I thought this might be the slot canyon I was looking for. I didn’t have any cell service to confirm this. I saddled up the backpack, check my water levels, take one last look at the skies above me, then head on out into the desert….

It didn’t take me long to be fully submersed in the slot canyon as the walls closed in. Quiet stillness was everywhere, i don’t think that my shoes made a sound as I went deeper down the canyon.

Lick Wash trail had everything I was looking for, beauty in Nature, peace and quiet, and the comfort a solo hiker searches out in the wild desert southwest.
