Lost Season One – How re-watching the show 21 years hits me now
Revisiting the 2005 TV Lost season 1, and how it relates to me now

In 2005, much like most of America, I was fascinated by the groundbreaking TV show Lost. Although I fell out of touch with it during later seasons, I thought I would re-watch the show now that I have more time to do so with my recent retirement. I just finished season one.
I want to focus on characters that had intriguing stories that I could fully relate to. To start with, let’s talk about Sayid.
In 2005, discussions and thoughts about the Middle East and Iraq were hot topic issues. It was a scary time in our country. To showcase an Iraqi soldier and his perspective not only on the USA but the world in general was brave and eye-opening.
John Locke. The tragedy that befell him and how he was mysteriously healed after the plane crashed on the island held me captivated. Having worked in healthcare my whole career, I could fully relate to his incredulous transformation, as well as how he wanted to find the cause or at least a deeper meaning behind what happened to him, and why….
Boone and Shannon were tragic figures. Having lost my own sister in 2007 (which is why I stopped watching the show) had me in tears upon this re-watch. Kate and Jack were equally compelling, and Sawyer was both comic relief as well as a man with a hidden past, dark and brooding.
What the heck is the Dharma Initiative? It reminded me of the theories people have about Governments testing on unsuspecting humans, truly evil even though they are operating under a belief of doing it for the greater good.
Having dealt with addiction most of my adult life, either personally or from a romantic partner, Charlie’s story cut deep, as well as Claire’s and her unplanned and (at first) unwanted pregnancy.
The back and forth storytelling was something not before seen on Television, and since this was before streaming, having a season with twenty plus episodes really allowed us as viewers to become fully invested in each character’s story, making this entire show compelling to watch. I look forward to the next season and my thoughts on that…
