The Labor Day long weekend is here, which finally gives me some time to explore a place that I’ve wanted to see for over twenty years now…..Mount Graham. High above the community of Safford, Arizona, this lone mountain is the perfect place to explore while escaping our brutal summer valley heat.

The single road takes one up close to the summit, with trails to be found that you can climb to the top for breath taking views of the valleys from all sides. If you keep driving the road (which I did), the gravel turns to dirt and eventually you end up at a mountain lake. I don’t recall the name, but it was worth the drive.

I hike the circumference of the lake, watching people fishing from shore, playing fetch with their dogs, and just enjoying the cool weather and scenery. I find more trails to hike, watching lizards basking in the sun on rocks, the occasional deer poking its head from the trees.

The mountains in the distance fade behind wisps of clouds. I can feel the Great Mother up here, calming all those within her path that she is watching and protecting us.
