Spontaneity and a wild hair have struck again, this time from a fellow blogger. The Joyful Shoehorn, a great blog about hiking and wine in Oregon, shared a story recently about going to a concert in Portland at the Oregon Zoo.
Yeah, I was intrigued too. So I checked it out, and they had a concert planned for last Saturday. The band was a group I’d never heard of called Pink Martini.
They sounded interesting and I wanted to experience a concert in a zoo. It had all the right ingredients for something unique.
The concert is full of energy with orangutan’s on my right, birds of prey overhead, tiger’s on my left. The opening act is Portland’s own FAME academy, young adults with mental disabilities, and their performance doesn’t leave a dry eye in the house.
When Pink Martini came on with the women in cocktail dresses and the men in sharp dressed suits, I knew I was in for a treat. From instruments ranging from a Japanese harpsichord to a ninety four year old clarinetist, it was quite the evening. Songs ranged from being sung in English to Japanese, French, and even Italian.
Masterful, different, and beautiful. A perfect mix of everything I love about music. Expand your horizons and give them a listen, you might just surprise yourself….
