the Bio-Bay in Fajardo
Bio luminescent bays?
I had no idea what it was either, but what the hell, I was in Puerto Rico and felt invincible, like Superman far from Kryptonite. Especially after a few local Medallas….
As we got geared up and ready to kayak, the guide explained that A bio bay is a body of water that contains millions of micro-organisms, called “dinoflagellates”, that glow in the dark for a second when agitated. Cool, I love science. So began the adventure upriver, through mangrove trees and into the experience of a lifetime.
After a few incidents of running our kayak into the trees, other kayaks, etc… ( remember the Medalla’s and throw in a rum punch or two) we made it to the bay at sunset.
Our guide explained how the bioluminescence works as we waited for the sun to set. As darkness falls, I dip my hand in the water and see it covered in “Avatar” blueness! As we row, the blueness is everywhere.
The experience is everything in that moment, all that one needs, desires, or hopes for.
