the Forts of Old San Juan

Called “The guardians of the Caribbean”, the stone walls tower next to the blue ocean water. These massive defenses, which were began in the 16th century, are the oldest European style fortifications in the United States. The forts in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

It was a perfect Sunday for exploring the many tunnels and staircases that wind through the interior, a way to escape the heat and humidity. Four hundred years worth of history was at our fingertips, illustrations of the remarkable work of the Spanish military engineers.

You eventually emerge topside and climb upon a fortress wall, sitting and looking out at the ocean with salty breezes cooling your skin.

Not too shabby of a way to spend your Sunday.

Wench, bring my ale, what say you?
