Tufa is essentially limestone. Underwater springs that are rich with calcium mix with lake water that is rich in carbonates. The chemical reaction that occurs results in the formation of limestone.
The dramatic drop in lake water levels here leave the mighty tufa exposed. The resulting landscape mirrors one more suited to Mars than our planet.
