I leave Gulfoss waterfall, and wonder how I can fill the time on my final day until I fly out of domestic Reykjavík airport this evening. I decide on just driving out to the Rekjanes Peninsula and see what I stumble upon.

No more than ten minutes later, I find myself back at the Geysir area that I had explored the prior day. I had no idea Gulfoss was so close by, but with it being a rainy and cold morning, hardly anyone was here. It was the perfect time to go more closely explore the cold steam geysir that predictably erupts every 10 or so minutes. I enjoyed quite a few eruptions, even becoming showered in a cold spray!

Leaving the Geysir area to the tundra ladened Peninsula I go. This would be the backside to where I started this adventure a week ago. I find a lava cave tunnel tour but need to wait a couple of hours before I can go, so back to exploring the Reykjanes I go. First up, a lone church rises by the sea….

I find inspiration in the lone painted canvases of sea faring sailors. I venture out along lonely dirt roads and just wander out into the landscape. A lone bird dances and calls my name as the sea breeze tickles my nose.

Back to the Lava tunnel cave I go, as my tour is ready to begin. Fascinated I have always been with caves, and add in lava from centuries past and call me smitten.

Eventually my time comes to an end as I leave the beauty of Reykjanes Peninsula and head back to Reykjavík. After a week in relative isolation the harsh reality of bustling traffic and people stresses me out, but I eventually find my way to the domestic airport, located in the heart of the city. I easily drop off my rental car, walk into the airport hangar, and board my flight across country, back to East Iceland….ready for another adventure!

Wench, bring my ale, what say you?
