I’m treated with beautiful aeriel Icelandic views on the quick flight across country. Less than an hour later and I’m back in East Iceland. I’ve arranged for a taxi to pick me up, drive me over the mountain and to my resting place for the night….Seyðisfjørður.

I get put up in a lovely room in a historic building, just behind the infamous Blue Church and rainbow street. It’s been a long day, so I enjoy a divine meal then head straight to bed. I have the entire following day to explore…..

I wake up feeling fantastic. Strolling back to the main section of town, I find a map showing the different trails one can take to explore the mountains that surround this little port town. I start by following the river and soon find myself ensconced in the Icelandic countryside.

It’s a beautiful day, blue skies with high clouds, a light breeze and perfect temperatures. I walk past waterfalls and gorges, watch ships come and go from the harbor far below, search for animals off in the distance, and just truly emerge myself in nature in a way I haven’t been able to before.
It is on this day that I truly fell in love with this country.

I walk to one end of this glacial valley, then decide to head back and traverse to the other end, hoping to find the Tvisöngur sound sculptures. This hike was certainly more strenuous, but I welcome the challenge. Eventually I see the sound sculptures below me…

I enjoy a quick break listening the music reverberate in a haunting yet fascinating and smoothing manner throughout the sound sculptures. I then descend the rest of the mountain and find myself back at the edge of town.

Slowly I walk back to the center of town, taking in the high mountains above and reveling in the day’s hike. I find a spot of grass and enjoy the warm sunshine as I read a book, waiting for my taxi.

Right on time my taxi driver is, and we head back over the mountain, as tonight I’m staying in my first hostel ever. I’m nervous about it, but chalk it up to being part of this grand adventure. More about all of this to come in the next post…..
