It is the only mountain range contained entirely within a single National Park. The crags of the Chisos Mountains called out to me every day that I passed by them whilst exploring the different areas of Big Bend. On the second to last day of 2017 as the afternoon wanes into pre-evening, I make the seven mile journey into the heart of the mountains, the Chisos Basin.
Signs warning you to be weary of bears and mountain lions dot the road and campsites. I realize that with the late hour that I will not be able to get a full hike in, so I opt instead to follow the Window View trail so that I can get a good feel of the area, and work on a plan to return in the morning.
I’m inspired with this mountain basin that has been encircled in Mother Nature’s beauty. I see peaks that call my name, long trails that my feet are itching to walk, and a sense that my hike in the morning will be the perfect way to end 2017.
I leave the Window View trail, the tents and campers, cabins and people who are currently flooding the Chisos Basin, and look forward to returning early in the morning to a more peaceful and hopefully successful hike, sans bears and lions.
