Driving hours through the tall grasses of the Maasai Mara, past Acacia trees and endless skies. Arriving at the border of Kenya and Tanzania to one of the most amazing wonders of the Natural World…..

The spot of the annual Wildebeest migration across the Mara River at the hippo pools.

In late July and throughout August every year, millions of Wildebeest will cross this very spot, a few sacrificing their lives to hungry crocodiles waiting just beyond the shoreline.

The day we arrive though, the river is unnervingly quiet. I scan the water for crocodiles, spotting only a few hippos in the distance. The ranger appears behind me ( from where I’m not sure) and asks if we’d like to go walk the Mara.

“Can I hold your gun first?”

He just laughs, tells me he can’t let me hold it solo, but I can touch it. I’ll take what I can get.

You hear the “great debate” while here….are hippos the most dangerous animals, or is it the Water Buffalo?

All I can tell you is I have a healthy respect for both amazing animals, and keep my distance equally.

Wench, bring my ale, what say you?
