My Walkabout

On my last day in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya I found myself at the Unity Centre school saying goodbye to the students, teachers, workers, and community.

Goodbyes are hard for me in this place, as I do not want the people here to think that I will go back to my home and not think of them anymore. ( To the contrary, I find myself thinking about them all the time)

Ann, one of the many students at the school, is one very special person to me. She is the daughter I do not have in my life at home, my little sister, and an inspirational spirit to be around. Beautiful, kind, warm,and loving are just some adjectives that describe Ann. So as things were slowing down and we were packing up to head to the airport, I took the chance and asked Ann to come with me into one of the empty classrooms.

When we were alone, Ann and I spoke. I held her in my arms as she cried to me, telling me how much she will miss me, and how hard life is for her. I held her like a parent holds a child, comforting her with soft words of encouragement. I wanted her to know that I would not ever forget her. I then got the idea to record this last moment together.

As one can see, we really weren’t “alone” as I guess all the kids followed us. They always want to know what the Mzungu ( white person) is up to….
