The Brink of War

I was sixteen years old in 1986. I would hear about the Cold War in history class, and on the evening and late night news that my parents would watch.

Over the last thirty years as the political climate became more toxic, hate filled and judgemental, I have lost friends, family and co-workers, both for their points of view as well as for voicing my own thoughts. In retrospect, it all is just so sad. We should not have to silence our opinions in fear of losing relationships.

I was just looking for a quiet afternoon at the theater when I purchased a ticket to see The Brink of War. I do like a good historical movie. I had no idea it was produced by Angel Studios, and was somewhat apprehensive initially as this studio usually does movies with a certain religious connotation, and I try to avoid such things.

I realized just how judgemental I was being, as this movie was a insightful look into the meeting Ronald Reagan had with Mikhail Gorbachev in 1986 in Iceland with the goal being to reduce the number of nuclear weapons by both countries, and what eventually came from this lead to the fall of the Soviet Union and the end to the Cold War. It highlights how conversation, persistence and open mindedness can lead to greater changes for the world at large. If only we could perhaps learn from this in this day and age…..

Wench, bring my ale, what say you?
